BOOK - RICE COUNTY FAMILIES. PUB. 1981 Frank Machacek Family. Frank Machacek married Anna Svoboda in Czechoslovakia where he worked as a blacksmith during the spring and summer; in the winter months he would work in Vienna where he learned to speak German. Two children were born to them in Czechoslovakia before they emigrated to America in 1862. They traveled on a sail-ship, the least expensive way to travel. A change of wind direction extended their time at sea to more than 6 weeks, causing a severe shortage of food during the trip. When they landed in New York they went on to Chicago, arrived in Minneapolis, and then traveled on foot from there to Jordan. They spent some time at St. Joseph's Church there. All they really had to their names were the few clothes and 2 feather-ticks. The youngest child was in diapers and they would stop to wash a diaper in as tream and fasten it to their backs so that it would dry as they walked along. At Jordan they heard that a Czech settlement had started in New Prague, so again they walked, carrying their 2 children and the feather-beds. As they approached the settlement early evening in the fall, they saw a light in a cabin which belonged to an Anton Philip family. Apparently the German that Frank had learned in Vienna proved him in good stead and the Philips took him and his family in for the winter. The next spring Frank was able to open a blacksmith shop in New Prague. Later in the year he bought a farm near Veseli and this is where he and Anna settled to raise their family of 8. Mary married Joe Moyha, died at age of 25, leaving 3 sons and 1 daughter; Kathryn married Michael Sirek. The following children were born in America--Anna, married Frank Vobydu and they moved to the Dakotas where she died in a prairie fire. Her husband came back to Veseli and persuaded Anna's sister, Barbara, to marry him to bring up the 2 sons born to him and Anna and they had 3 children born to their marriage. Mike, who married Anna Drozda, was one of the founders of New Prague foundry and later founded the Northfield Foundry. Joseph married Elizabeth Ziskovsky who died in 1926 and he then married a widow named Mary Machacek. Frank K. married Mary Skluzacek. Vaclav (one of set of twins, other one died) was married to Agnes Dvorak and Elizabeth was married to John Zeman. Frank Machacek died in 1907 at age 74 and Anna died in 1931 at age 96.

5. Frank K. MACHACEK died in 1939 and was buried in 1939.

General Notes: BOOK - RICE COUNTY FAMILIES. PUB. 1981 Frank K. and Mary Machacek. Frank K. Machacek was born in 1877 and lived on the Veseli farm of his parents, Frank and Anna, until his marriage to Mary Skluzacek on January 1, 1897. They settled on a farm in Erin Township, 3 miles south of Lonsdale. They bought this 104 acres of woods for $300. They first built a log granary (still standing) in which they lived until they were able to build a house later. The next 22 years found them sawing trees, sawing lumber, and grubbing land until there was mostly tillable land when their oldest son, Frank W., was married in 1919 and took over the homestead. The elder Frank and his wife then bought 120 acres in Forest Township where they lived until son, Joseph, was married in 1923 and took over that farm. Then they "retired" to Lonsdale. Frank and Mary had 5 children. Their oldest, Frank M., was born in 1898 and married Josephine Pumper in 1919. Their children are Elsie (Mrs. Blasι Bisek) who has 3 children, Larry, Patricia, and Rebecca; Agnes (Mrs. Wencl Kratochvil) has 6 children, James, Carol, Deborah, Barbara, John and Theresa; Bernice (Mrs. George Zelenka) has 3 daughters, Julie, Joan, and Nanette; and Norbert (Mary Alice Voracek) who has 3 children, Diane, Dwayne and Douglas. The 3 daughters all live in the New Prague area while Norbert lives in Forest City, IA. Frank died of leukemia on October 3, 1951. The following September, during the polio epidemic, Norbert was stricken with bulbar polio. Josephine now lost even the help of her 15-year old son in the operation of the farm; but, with the help of neighbors and relatives who gathered with their tractors and equipment, the harvesting and plowing was completed that fall. She remained on the farm until it was sold to Francis Vozejpka in 1963 when she moved to Lonsdale. Emil was born in 1899 (died December 1975). He married Mary Douda and they farmed adjacent to the family homestead. Their children are Myles (married Cecelia Malecha); Raymond (Florence Tiougan, St. Charles, MN), both of Faribault, and Helen 9jack Crawford) of Owatonna. Helen was stricken with polio at the same time as her cousin Norbert. She spent more than 1 year at the Sister Kenny Institute where she met her future husband. The grandchildren are Barbara, Michael and Robert, children of Raymond and Florence. Emil served as Rice County Commissioner, 5th District, for 24 years. Joseph (born December 31, 1901) was married to Emma Sevcik on October 29, 1923. Their history is in the Forest Township area. Mary was married to Wm. C. Sevcik (brother of Emma) on April 19, 1926. They settled on a farm in Erin Township which their son, Richard, now owns. Richard is married to Rosemary Koenig and their 7 children are Catherine, Vernon, Mary, Linda, Larry, Jerry, Allen and Mike. Richard's sister, Lillian, married George J. Skluzacek and their children are Lloyd, Jerry, Donald, Ricky, Randy, Ann, and Mary Beth. The youngest of the 5 Machacek children was Emma. She married John J. Malecha on October 4, 1932. They settled on a farm across the road from her parents original homestead and now her brother's home. In 1958 they sold their farm to Sidney Vikla and moved to Northfield where John was employed at Carleton College for 15 years and "Emily" worked at the Northfield Country Club for more than 8 years until they both retired. They had 2 daughters. Ruth is married to Richard Matson; they live in Northfield and have 4 children, Colleen, Richard Jr., Jennifer and Andrew. Rita is married to Jim McAloon. They live in Denver, CO, and have no children. Frank K. Machacek was one of the early pioneers of the Immaculate Conception Church in Lonsdale, serving on the original building committee. His sons, Frank and Joseph, would in turn serve on the building committee when that original church was later replaced. Frank had also served as a parish trustee for many years. He died March 18, 1939, and his wife, Mary, died on July 12, 1950.

Frank married Mary SKLUZACEK, daughter of Thomas SKLUZACEK and Mary, on January 1, 1897. Mary was born on December 23, 1878 in Lonsdale(RICE)MN, died on July 17, 1950 in Lonsdale(RICE)MN at age 71, and was buried on July 19, 1950 in Lonsdale(RICE)MN.

General Notes: BOOK - RICE COUNTY FAMILIES. PUB. 1981 Machacek. Vaclav (Jim) Machacek was born September 22, 1878, in Veseli, Wheatland Township, Rice County. He was the son of Frank and Anna Svoboda Machacek and the 2nd youngest of 9 children. His father, Frank, was a blacksmith and a farmer. As a boy, Vaclav was a Mass server at their church. Besides helping at home, he worked as a hired hand on large farms near Farmington. On May 1, 1900, Vaclav Machacek married Agnes Dvorak, daughter of Rudolph and Katerina Horejsi Dvorak. She was born in Slavnovice, Czechoslovakia, on January 15, 1877, and came to America in 1882 with her parents, 1 brother and 4 sisters, and settled near Webster. Her father was a shoemaker, farmer, and basket weaver. Vaclav and Agnes Machacek farmed on 40 acres, later buying 80 more. Their children were taught to work at an early age and helped with chores, garden, housework and field work along with their parents. They also sang in the church choir. Recreation was enjoyed by visiting neighbors, sleigh rides, feather-bee parties, gatherings for baptisms, birthdays, wedding anniversaries, holidays, especially Christmas, and the wonderful singing that took palce. There were also dances at the Veseli Hall. The home-baked food was delicious; duck and dumplings and such delicacies as kolacky, koblihi and other pastries. Vaclav and Agnes were honest, hard-working unpretentious people who made a living form their land and always paid their way. They were devout Catholics, loved God and country, and always were ready to help others. Vaclav hauled lumber and materials with his team of horses, along with the neighbors, to build the local church and school. Agnes was a charter member of the Alter Society of the Veseli Church. They were active members of the Most Holy Trinity Parish and farmed in the Veseli community all their lives. They lived long enough to see all their children established in their own homes and become responsible and respectable citizens. Vaclav and Agnes celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on May 1, 1950, with mass at the church and dinner at the church hall for family and friends. On May 1, 1960, their children hosted a dinner for them at their home. May 1, 1962, the family gathered together to celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary. Agnes was not well and died on June 30, 1962. Vaclav lived with his daughters until March 3, 1974, when he died at the age of 95 years. Their children are: Adeline (Mrs. Charles C.) Bartusek; James F. Machacek, living on the home farm; Julie (Mrs. Joseph L.) Tupy; and Angela (Mrs. Henry A.) Simon.
