Nicholas Hart's name appears in records in Boston in 1643, Taunton in 1642 and Warwick, R.I. in 1648. He was a soldier in William Pool's company of Continentals in 1643.

The "Savage Genealogy" [James Savage, A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England] says: "Nicholas Hart was of Taunton, Massachusetts, 1642, and was ex-communed there and came to Boston, Massachusetts, 1643, remained there until 1648, a merchant." He was a colonial soldier in William Pool's company, 1643. He married Joanna, youngest daughter of Edward Rossiter, who came from England with Governor John Winthrop, of Massachusetts. The "Austin Genealogy" says: "Nicholas Hart of Warwick, Rhode Island, left one son only; Richard, born probably in England in 1635." See forward.
(II) Richard, only son of Nicholas Hart, of Warwick, Rhode Island, was a mariner. December 10, 1657, he received a grant of eight acres of land in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. (V) Philip, youngest son of Captain Richard (3) and Mary (Taber) Hart, was born in Little Compton, Rhode Island, January 12, 1749, died on the farm in Dutchess county, New York, August 31, 1837. He went with his brothers, Richard and Jeremiah, about 1770, to Dutchess county, and bought a large farm on the turnpike leading from Poughkeepsie, New York, to Sharon, Connecticut, about fifteen miles east of the former city. On this farm Richard Hart built a house which was later occupied by Philip and is yet standing (1903). Soon after 1770 many families from Dartmouth, Massachusetts, settled at this point, including several Hart families and a Benjamin Aiken (2) and family. It became known as Hart's Village, now Millbrook. On January 7, 1784, he bought out the equity of his brothers, Richard and Jeremiah, in the farm and later purchased the dower right of his stepmother, Abigail Hart, and became sole owner of the Dutchess county farm. The two-arched stone bridge that spanned the river on the Fall River road was carried away by the *freshet of February 13, 1886, the immediate cause being a large log that came down over Tisdale's dam. This struck the south abutment with great force, and remaining in an eddy, continured to pound the abutment, at last loosening the stones, and allowing the swift current to reach the gravel behind them. The bridge was rebuilt with a single arch the following summer. In the meantime a roadway through the Allen Chace land to Elm street was utilized. The railroad bridge and embankment at Hopping Paul Brook was carried away at the same time. A train of empty coal cars soon came along and plunged into the brook, killing the fireman, Edgar Francis Russell of Somerset, Massachusetts.

*Freshet: a flood resulting from heavy rain or a spring thaw.

Whitinsville (also seen in records as Whitingsville) is an unincorporated village and census-designated place (CDP) on the Mumford River, a tributary of the Blackstone River, in the town of Northbridge in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,340 at the 2000 census. Whitinsville is pronounced as if it were spelled "White-ins-ville." The current 2009 estimated population is 9205.[1]

Death date and place a little different than my previous records. Familysearch.com has the death date as February 12, 1886 and the place as Somerset. Type Birth Cause of Death: Teething. Cause of Death found on FamilySearch.com (original record image)
Teething used to be considered (wrongly) a cause of death, as many children died in the first years of life, at the same time as teething occurs. "The tendency in the past to attribute serious disease to teething was so prevalent that in 1842 teething was the registered cause of death in 4.8% of all infants who died in London under the age of 1 year and 7.3% of those between the ages of 1 to 3 years according to the Registrar General's report."[2]
Ironically, while teething is a natural process which creates little more than discomfort, some methods for relieving teething pain have caused serious harm and even death. Old remedies for teething include "blistering, bleeding, placing leeches on the gums, and applying cautery to the back of the head".[3] In the sixteenth century the French surgeon Ambroise Paré introduced the lancing of gums using a lancet, in the belief that teeth were failing to emerge from the gums due to lack of a pathway, and that this failure was a cause of death. This belief and practice persisted for centuries, with some exceptions, until towards the end of the nineteenth century lancing became increasingly controversial and was then abandoned, although as late as 1938 an Anglo-American dental textbook advised in favour of lancing, and described the procedure.[3] In the first half of the twentieth century, teething powders in the English-speaking world often contained calomel, a form of mercury. It was removed from most powders in 1954 when it was shown to cause "pink disease" (acrodynia), a form of mercury poisoning.[4]
Teething toys have a long history. In England in the 17th\endash 19th centuries, a coral meant a teething toy made of coral, ivory or bone, often mounted in silver as the handle of a rattle.[5] A museum curator has suggested that these substances were used as "sympathetic magic"[6] and that the animal bone could symbolize animal strength to help the child cope with pain.

AOCS US Navy (Aviation Officers Candidate School)
US NAVY WWII
Korea
Vietnam

Service Dates 3-17-1941 to 9-30-1966

The United States Navy's Officer Candidate School, currently located at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, provides training to become a commissioned officer. Attendance is one possible way for civilian college graduates (bachelor's degree or higher) with no military experience to earn a commission as a U.S. Navy officer. Additionally, the Navy also enrolls a significant number of candidates with current or prior enlisted experience in the military. In this way, OCS serves as a path to commissioned status for high-performing enlisted personnel. Alternatives include the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps, Officer Development School (ODS), and graduation from the United States Naval Academy.--wikipedia

The Navy previously operated two officer candidate programs, OCS at Newport, Rhode Island and Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) at NAS Pensacola, Florida. AOCS trained prospective Naval Aviators, Naval Flight Officers, Aviation Maintenance Duty Officers, and Air Intelligence Officers, while OCS trained all other Officer communities. The original US Navy OCS in Newport, Rhode Island began operation in 1951 and was closed down in April 1994 when the programs were merged as a single OCS at NAS Pensacola. Subsequently, in 2007 the consolidated Navy OCS curriculum was relocated back to Newport by direction of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission of 2005. A difference in class numbering between OCS and AOCS was that AOCS classes were numbered by graduation date in the calendar year vice fiscal (for example, the first glass to graduate in January would be Class 01-YY as opposed to the first class in the fiscal year (October)).
In AOCS, all basic military training was administered by enlisted drill instructors from the United States Marine Corps. This facet of the training (origin of the slogan "Navy owned, Marine Corps trained") at AOCS in Pensacola was considered a point of pride and mark of distinction by graduates of AOCS that separated themselves from the graduates of OCS in Newport. When the single OCS was established in Pensacola, the program retained both the Marine DIs of AOCS and the US Navy CPOs of Newport. Newport OCS now has both.--wikipedia

Highlight of his Naval career: Launching the first guided missiles from the USS Boxer into North Korea (1952). They used obsolete fighter aircraft and attached 2,000 lb. bomb on the belly and catapulted the pilotless aircraft to the targets with the control mother plane following. ----as told to me by Lester Russell

Subject: Inquiry on Lester Bruce Russell
Patty,
I came across your name when looking up a headstone in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery. We recently moved into a house in Savage, MN and found a headstone in our backyard with the name LESTER BRUCE RUSSELL on it. It appears to have been in our backyard for quite a few years, but I wanted to verify with someone that it was not stolen from anywhere. I was planning on calling the city of Savage, however, after coming across your name on the associated Fort Snelling site, I was hoping you could provide me any information as to whether or not someone wants this before we get rid of it. If you would like, I can send you a picture of where we found it in our backyard.
Thank you,

Patty,
Sorry for the delay on this. Yes, Fort Snelling was able to come over and pick them up. They were unsure how they got there, but said if they ever find out that they will let me know. If I hear anything back from them, I'll be sure to let you know.
