General Notes: Karel was a farmer at Cermna 234, 1773-1816. He was born Oct 22, 1750 and it was a glorious day for the household. His father Martin was a devout Catholic and the godparents were some of the most prominent people of the town: Priest, Charles Janofsky, Prosecutor of Prague, Dr. Severin Brietman; Cerman Magistrate, John George Hubl and a close friend, Rose Marek. Many well wishes were issued during this happy occasion over little Charles' cradle, as well as many threats uttered against unyielding heretics (Non-Catholics), which were continually arriving in Cermna as a result of high world and church official persecution. The mother, Katherine, daughter of George Dusek, heard all of this, who according to her family tradition was secretly, anti-catholic. She resolved to bring up Karel in the faith of her father, but she did not have an easy task. Many self-sacrifices and denials were encountered so that her husband would not become aware that his own wife was destroying the very things he in his Catholic fanaticism was trying to build. She, like many other mothers was proclaiming to he child over the cradle the wonderful message of Jesus Christ. Young Charles did not disappoint the hope of his mother. In 2 years after the death of his father, on Oct 21, 1772, he married Ann, daughter of Martin Betlach. After 2 more years, he took over his parents farm.
The real estate books show as follows: In the Year of our Lord 1774, 16 day of August, Charles Dusek bought the farm land after his deceased father Martin Dusek for the sum of 300 kop grosu ($6,690.00). Paid down 50 kop grosu ($1,116.00), the balance to be paid at 5 kopach ($112.00) annually, or ($9.33 per month). When Charles took over the farm according to inheritance customs, he built a secret room, where he sheltered foreign ministers. Entry into this room was through a secret masked trap door. A path along the farm was used by the Catholic neighbors to attend morning Mass. It happened that they often heard mysterious sounds and therefore many swore the house was haunted. In the meantime, the hidden foreign guests spent the time sharing their experiences in voluntary confinement. After the declaration of the Edict of Toleration in 1781, Charles Dusek was the first organizer of the Cermna Brethren Congregation. For a place of worship, he offered land. However, the majority of the members lived in the upper (horni) community and therefore Charles' offer was not acceptable. His name is mentioned a number of times in the chronicles of the congregation's founding. In his home, field #234, were held the first spiritually inspired worship services. This was in December of 1782 and pastor Frank Kovac delivered the message. A year later Charles rode his horses to Kroune to pick up the first minister of Cermna, Samuel Szutse. Because this minister was not yet officially confirmed by the higher authorities, they immediately left for Chrudim to see the district captain, and were granted the request. With the arrival of minister Szutse, upon the request of the Catholic priest, Janisch, and order forbidding any activity by Szutse was issued by the district office. The reason was that the Cermna Brethren congregation had only one half the required members. To organize a congregation required 500 souls or 100 families. There were only 250 souls in all of Cermna. For 6 months Charles provided room and board for Rev. Szutse in his home until Emperor Josef II graciously granted permission to organize and Evangelical Brethren Congregation in Cermna. Upon installation of the first elders, Charles was named the administrative director. The wife of Charles Dusek remained a faithful Catholic for a long time and it is reported that often she disturbed the worship services being held in her home. She purposely banged dishes, pots and pans while washing them and took her time doing them. According to legend, being an influential farmer's wife, she was often asked to be godparent by many of the neighboring Catholic families. And it so happened on one such occasion, that the Catholic priest purposely omitted her name as a godparent, because her own home was considered a refuge of heretics. This incident was highly insulting to this self-conscious woman and she made an about face. She changed to Evangelical Brethren faith and from then on was a faithful helper in the endeavors of her husband.
Charles Dusek was prominent in other matters. It is very remarkable, that during the time when the Evangelical Brethren were being persecuted and considered inferior, this zealous Evangelist was twice appointed as the Magistrate or Chief Justice of Peace of Cermna. The first years he served were from 1794-1802 and the second from 1806-1813. In this office Charles was confronted with many hardship
cases resulting even in hunger and destitution as a result of the strict decisions he was compelled to make in compliance with the laws. These conditions weighed heavily on Charles' conscience and he wished to amend any such results of his decisions with good deeds. Therefore, during the night, he would secretly leave gifts of bread and wheat on the window sills of the homes of these poor people. As a result of his action, many people were converted to his belief. The second time he was appointed as Justice of the Peace, his predecessor and his wife had been removed due to bad management and sent to serve in the army. Justice of the Peace Charles Dusek was very skilled in the law. Many orphans were granted the highest awards of their fathers' inheritance. It is stated the Prince Liechenstein often asked who represented the defendant. When he heard it was Charles, he waived the trial. During the second term of office, he established and Evangelical Church School. He also prepared plans for building a new school in the lower section of the community. In the year of 1801, during the Napoleonic Wars, the Cermna community was required to provide 5 feather beds and 37 pieces of gold for the army needs in Lanskroun.
Charles lived with his first wife Anna Betlach for 34 years and they had 12 children. Three months after Anna died, Charles, at the age of 56 married again, to Ann Junek age 27, daughter of Frank Junek, cottager from Cermna, Field #276. They had 5 children. The difference between Charles first child born in 1773 and his last, born in 1815 is 42 years. When his last daughter was born he was 65 years old, and already many times a grandfather. This large family required large expenditures, not only in raising the children, but also in reaching maturity, for weddings and wreaths. Charles was an industrious man and a good father and provider. Beside his inheritance from his father, he also possessed a smaller homestead in Smrcin, Field #84. He paid 100 pieces of gold for it, leveled the dam and planted a meadow. The stones from the dam were moved to his farm in 1785, where he built a large cellar for potatoes. The cellar was still standing in 1988. In 1787, Charles bought a piece of land, Field #240 for 500 pieces of gold from John Betlach, where he built a home, Field #337. He was preparing this one for one of his sons. Besides farming, Charles was also involved in a linen business. He also wanted to establish a wine business, however the higher authorities refused to grant him permission. Tradition relates that when a young lad, Charles was very intelligent and talented, however disobedient and defiant. For these characteristic features, he was drafted into the army, where he patiently learned to behave and in addition learned the German language fluently, which later served him well. Once while riding his horse on his way home for leave, he met a funeral procession, bearing the casket of his father. They opened the casket and the son saw his father for the last time and then soon left again for the army. A short time later he was allowed to return home and take over the inherited farmstead.
In the year 1811, he built a cottage for his retirement, Field #406, which was near the road to his field. He moved there with his family in 1816 at the age of 81. In his old age he retained his strong and honorable character and liked to share his experiences and opinions with family and friends. He died at his home.

2. From Frances Szabo Spagnoletti's e-mail: 5/13/05, Alois and Anna were sweethearts in Bohemia. It was planned that they would marry in the US. Alois emigrated first in 1874 or 1875 and went directly to Wichita, Ks where he worked in a butcher shop. Wichita was on the Chisolm Trail and lots of cattle went through there. Anna arrived to the US in May of 1877 and first went to visit relatives in MN and then traveled to Wichita to marry Alois. As she understands the story, they went to the priest in Wichita, he said they had to wait so "marriage banns" could be called. Anna had no place to stay. 131. Frantisek DUSEK was born on June 30, 1837 in Dolni Cermna, Bohemia, died in 1907 in (CONCHO)TX at age 70, and was buried in 1907.
General Notes: Frantisek came to Texas in 1870 from Cermna. In 1900 moved to Lawake Community in Concho County near Rowena, Texas.
From "History of the Ethnic Cultures In The Ballinger Area" And acknowledgement to Don Schroeder.
The name Dusek appears to be patronymical in origin. Different spellings of the original sir name are a common occurrence. The most prominent variations of Dusek are: Duseck, Dusecky, Dussek, or Dusczek. The name had it's origin centuries ago and still is commonly know through out the world. In early historical records, Dusek's are mentioned as authors, composers, musicians, and artists. Many also preferred the rural life, as farmers and ranchers which in East and West Texas seemed to have been the choice.
The earliest ancestor on record was Martin Dusek, b: 1550 in Dolni, Dobrouc, which is in the northeastern part of Bohemia close to the Polish border. The Duseks were Hussities, members of the Reformed Faith. A few centuries later, the descendants of this family moved to Dolni Cermna which is a few miles south of
Dolni Dobrouc, in the province of Orlice.
Frantisek rented 100 acres of land which he later purchased. In that place 2 daughters Emilie and Rozalie and 1 son Vincenc were born. After 30 years of farming in East Texas, he decided to make a change. The reasons were too much rain, cotton grew shoulder high and produced little. Boll weevils were a menace. In 1897 he hitched the wagon, withdrew some savings from the Elgin Bank and road off for West Texas where he purchased about 3000 acres of pasture land on the Concho River from the Miller Cattle Company. Some of the land stretched into Runnels County. He then returned to East Texas for another 3 years and in 1900 shipped his cattle and horses by rail and his family came by covered wagon to Lowake, Texas where some of his descendants are still living today. The 3000 acres of Lowake land, bought at $.50 an acre was regarded as a bargain. A home had to be built. A well had to be dug and the land cleared for a field.
To fence in the cattle miles of barbed wire and hundreds of cedar posts had to be bought. Some hired help was necessary. However, settlers in the area helped with the work. The well which took many weeks of digging by hand was purposed to be the deepest and finest in the area. Some years later another hole was drilled for a windmill and through out the years the old well was put to use as a cistern which became the subject of much interesting conversation.
Religious services, weddings and funerals were held in homes of the people. Pastors from East Texas come to conduct the services. The Concho River was the southern boundary of the Dusek property. This became an ideal spot for community picnics, hymn singing and sermons, under the shady pecan trees. Each family brought their own food. Czech coffee cakes made with cottage cheese and poppy seed were the traditional delicacy. These were called "kolace". Lemonade was made in tubs. Some say, "from Concho water". Bibles, prayer books, catechisms, sermons and other works of biblical nature were brought from the old Country. Czech cook books printed as early as the 12th century were also some of the valuable items. Saturday night dances were held in the homes. 2 or 3 musicians would furnish the music playing the old Czech tunes, waltzes and polkas.
After a number of years of West Texas living, Frantisek began to see the necessity of a 5 year plan. 2 wet years and 3 dry ones, but not necessarily in that order. It meant farm and ranch survival and a way of life. In preparation for the bad years a cellar had to be stocked with surplus staples. In the fall, pecans were gathered, in winter, bacon, ham and sausages were smoked. A garden was always carefully prepared. There was hope and expectations, but also may times failure. Some days the wind blew and the windmill could not pump water. Flocks of birds would descend on the tinder plants. Hail storms and high winds caused total destruction. It was practical and necessary to be conservative and moderate in all things. "Do it yourself" was passed on from father to son, mother to daughter. Baking bread was a daily routine. Make, mend or repair was looked upon as a dollar earned. Do without if it wasn't absolutely necessary and some homemade substitute was sought.
In the small blacksmith shop, Frantisek would often be found bending over an anvil with a hammer pounding a glowing red piece of iron into something that had broken on the single row planter or cultivator.
In 1907 Frantisek met with an accidental death while rounding up cattle, or perhaps roping some wild steer. The horse he was riding galloped under a low pecan tree limb, and he suffered a severe head injury from which he never recovered.

General Notes: He married Anna daughter of Hynek Silar of Cermna, Field # 393 and Anna Mares, who was born May 21, 1844. The wedding was held on Nov 1, 1868. It was high time as in one month a son was born. They continued to farm Field # 268 until 1879. Joining many of their family and friends, they sold their possessions and migrated to America. They were joined on this journey by other Dusek families of Cermna, most of whom were direct descendants of the Justice of Peace and curator, Charles Dusek. This group included 2 brothers of Vincenc Dusek: Josef, born March 26, 1849 at Field # 268 and Frank, born March 25, 1852 at Field # 268 as well as his wife, Rosalie, born in 1849. Note: It is reported or acknowledged that Vincenc and Josef Dusek also had a brother Adolf here in Texas, and Frank Dusek mentioned above, seems to be unknown. At this point, we are not sure where the discrepancy might be as no Adolf is listed as a son of Vincenc and Elizabeth (Marek) Dusek. On Dec 15, 1879, with 4 small children, ages 5 months to 11 years, Vincenc and Anna Dusek arrived on the steamship Hannover, at New Orleans. The family first settled at Bieiblerville, Austin County, Texas. In 1888, the family moved to Bila Hora community near Hallettsville, La Vaca County, Texas where they farmed the rest of their active lives and are buried in the Vestin Brethern Cemetery near Hallettsville, Texas.
