I remember when I was little, going across Claussen's back yard, then behind the barn and to my Gandpa's house. Spotty and I would go see him around lunch time. Spotty loved sharing grandpa's lunch. When we moved in with Grandpa, Spotty would wait, and, around noon time would hear Grandpa's fork hit his plate and up the stairs he would go, for any scrap of food he could beg off Grandpa.

We moved in with Grandpa just after I turned 10 (1961). My dad and mom were going to buy a new house and when Grandpa heard that, he started to cry and begged my dad to move into his house with him, so we did. I don't think my mom ever wanted to live there, especially after Aunt Helen moved in. There was always conflict between them. Grandpa let mom and dad do whatever remodeling they wanted to do to the house (see photos in Betlach Book). I swear as do most of us who have had dealings with 311 Monroe Street, that it was and IS haunted. I had my own experiences with the house, my mom saw a lady at night, my best friend Anni, saw someone standing over Stephanie's crib just before we moved to North Carolina, there used to be the aroma of cigars, and roses. Water faucets would turn on, shades would fly up! Probably the "spirits" don't like the fact that the house was remodeled.

I remember Grandpa always singing or whistling. He seemed to be a very happy man. Tall and thin all his life. He used to see a Dr. Fritz. He would make the trip to Minneapolis and have his blood pressure taken and Dr. Fritz would take his money and put him on some kind of "powder" to drink. I had heard he used to suffer from ulcers, and that Dr. Fritz put him on a bland diet: Baby food, boiled meat, etc. I can't remember more than maybe a handful of times that he EVER went off that diet.

Before Easter and Christmas, Grandpa would take me with him on his trip to see Dr. Fritz, and when he was finished with the doctor, we would go shoe shopping! I always got new black patent leather shoes and M&M's on those trips. They sold candy then like Cub does now, by the pound, except ALL the candy was sold that way, everything that is packaged now was sold bulk then. Oh..how I loved those trips on that smelly old bus.

Grandpa was a kind, sweet man. I don't recall ever seeing him angry or raising his voice in anger.

Grandpa came to Anoka in 1928/9. He and Bertha met and married in Red Wood Falls (according to Uncle George, I have not found their marriage license yet). She was a dressmaker. At one time Granpa owned three houses in Anoka, 1) Branch Street. 2) 311 Monroe Street and 3) unknown at this time.
They were all purchased by sealed bids, that being a bid was submitted by a person and the one submitting the highest bid won.

Louis was a butcher like his father and also owned a meat market in Anoka, Minnesota called Betlach's Meats, it was located inside Jepson's Market on the corner of Main and Ferry Streets.

My Dad:

Oh Lord, how I miss him. It's difficult to write just one thing about my dad, he encompassed so much of my life. He was protective, sometimes overly protective of me. Maybe because I was the only girl, maybe because I was the baby of the family, the last child he was to have. Of course, growing up I thought he was being old fashioned, a fuddy duddy (like he would say) when he wouldn't let me do things when I was of "dating" age.

I remember going to the grocery store "Nielson's" down by the Rum River after school. Dad and mom both worked there when I was in grade school and I'd have to go there and wait for them to get off work. Then dad could no longer be a meat cutter (butcher) because he lost his big toe to gangrene and couldn't stand for long hours after that, so he became a school bus driver and during summer vacation he sometimes would take me on a charter with him if it was something he thought I'd like.

Fishing????? Look up the definition and you'll either find dad's picture there or my mom's. How those two could fish!

Rudy says when dad first came to Anoka (or there about) he would run moonshine for the man who owned the dry cleaners where he worked. (Dave Hymanson).]]

Occupations:
Anoka Cleaners------and ran a little moonshine!!! Early-mid 1930's
Federal Cartridge, until 1948
Minneapolis Arsenal, Guard during the war
Butcher- He and Uncles Joe and George all helped grandpa in his meat market "Betlach's Cash Market" located on 3rd & Main Street in Anoka, across from the Skelly Gas Station and S & L Department Store. Then grandpa had surgery in the mid 1940's and sometime after retired from the business. Dad then opened a meat market in Jepson's Grocery Store in 1948, on the corner of Main Street And Ferry Avenue In Anoka. Billy Graham used to come to Anoka and visit the Baptist church across the street from the meat market and he stopped in to the meat market/grocery store one day and my brother Robert met him, he patted Robert on the head and said he was a fine boy!
Then in the early 1950's about 1952/53 dad went to work at Nielsen's Grocery Store by the Rum River in Anoka. He worked in the meat department for Frank Vicha. Mom worked there as well, as a meat wrapper. I remember going to the grocery store after school. I'd have to go there and wait for them to get off work, because they wouldn't let me go home and stay alone. The store used to have a small coffee/donut counter and that is where I read the newspaper that Marilyn Monroe had been found dead in her home. There was a hardware store in the basement section of the grocery store. I used to go down there a lot and stare at all the toys that were for sale. Dad had very poor circulation in his legs, no doubt from years of smoking. He stood long hours cutting meat and that coupled with the smoking took it's toll. His feet would get so cold he couldn't feel them; one evening after work he came home and his feet were cold like ice. We had an old oil burning stove in the kitchen and he'd take his shoes and socks off and sit by the heater to try and warm them. One particular evening he was warming his feet and leaned over to reach something off the kitchen counter and unknowingly his big toe was touching the stove, he burned it quite badly and because of his poor circulation developed gangrene; he ended up having the toe amputated and suffered a great deal because the wound would never close. Going to his favorite Café for breakfast on day, an acquaintence notice dad hobbling on his foot and asked him what happened. During the course of the conversation the man advised him to quit smoking or the wound would never heal. It must have been worth it for dad to try because shortly after he quit smoking, the wound did start to close. He could no longer stand long hours cutting meat so he had to look for a new job. My brother Robert was at the time driving school bus for Kottke's Bus in Anoka. Dad took over his route and drove school bus, Bus #30 to be exact, for the Coon Rapids Minnesota School District until his retirement. The kids absolutely loved him to death.

Residences our family lived in Anoka, Mn (some before I was born):
2308 Wingfield Avenue
633 Cross Street--Owned by Edward Mills
1920 3rd Avenue South, A duplex (this is the first house I remember)
311 Monroe Stree--my grandfather's house. Grandpa bought this house on a sealed bit at an auction for around $2500.00

In 1961 my dad/mom were going to buy a home north of Anoka by the Fairgrounds. I remember my dad and I went to grandpa's house to tell him of their plan to purchase the home. Grandpa got very sad and after we left he came over and begged dad and mom to move into his big house so he wouldn't have to live there all alone. We moved in and mom and dad did extensive remodeling to the house. The original barn is still on the property. The home was originally owned by a doctor and my dad used to find glass medicine bottles in the dirt when he would dig up the ground to plant flowers and such. There were also some in the barn. The barn had two stalls for the doctor's horses. When we moved in the upstairs part of the barn was my play house. It had the sliding door that the doctor used to store the hay in for the horses, there were holes in the floor upstairs so the hay could be dropped down to the stalls. My dad once dug up a cow skull in the back yard; the odd part of this is the house sits one block off Main Street in Anoka. It sure must have looked different in the town back then.
After my father died, mom continued to live in the house with my grandma and my dad's sister, Helen. Helen died in 1985 and the house became too much for my mother and grandmother to manage. The house was sold but a stipulation was put on the sale by my brother Rudolph, that was: the barn was never to be torn down as long as the house stood.

Obituary, Anoka County Union
Posted: 12/30/04

'One of those officers bigger than life' dies
by L.A. Jones, Union editor

Lifelong Anoka resident Rudy Betlach, former Anoka High School football, baseball and track star and sergeant for the Anoka Police Department, "was a local cop in the good sense of the word," said Anoka Police Chief Ed Wilberg.

"He took the time to get know the residents," according to Wilberg about Betlach, 65, who the Anoka police chief remembers looking up to in his boyhood when Betlach was an athletic icon at the high school.

Betlach, who also served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1960 on the USS Boxer, died Dec. 23.

When Wilberg started with the Anoka PD in 1975, Betlach was an investigator and taught a lot of the young recruits, including himself, according to Wilberg.

"He was one of those officers who was bigger than life," Wilberg said, having recorded numerous track records at Anoka HS. "He always took great pride in helping other police officers."

The one distinct thing Wilberg recalls most about Betlach was that he always had a tale to tell, and his tales were dramatic, heartfelt and affected the way people felt about things.

"His stories all had a point to them," Wilberg said. "He was the kind of a man with stories that showed good always overcame evil."

If there was a kid from a good family, according to the chief, Betlach would take him or her under his badge in a disciplinarian type of way because he knew he would receive better punishment from his family than any kind of punitive measures the juvenile justice system could possibly dole out.

Because Betlach lived all of his life in Anoka, he knew many of the families in the community and made it a point to make friends and acquaintances with everyone he met.

When he retired from the Anoka PD, Betlach had risen to master sergeant in charge of coordinating the patrol division. Betlach was also a member of the Anoka American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sherrill L.; children Christine (Thomas) Vinje, Anthony Betlach, Elizabeth (Robert) Timm, Rachel (Matthew) Leshovsky, Theresa Betlach, Jessica (Peter) DuCharme; special daughter, Shari Frocier; sister Patricia A. Russell; brother Robert (Frances) Betlach; 13 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial occurred Dec. 28 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Private interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Arrangements were by Gearhart Anoka Funeral Home.

Eulogy
"KEEPING IT REAL WITH RUDY B."
Eulogy for Rudolph C. Betlach, December 28th, 2004

Who is Rudy Betlach? He is a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and most recently, a great grandfather who was born , raised and lived his entire life in Anoka. He is a natural born athlete who excelled in high school athletics and was voted most handsome of his senior class. ( A fact that we were reminded of again and again throughout our lives.) He also played basketball in the Navy for which he served three years.

He married our mom, Sherrill, in 1960 and they just celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on December 10th. He became a father in 1961 (for the FIRST time) and became a police officer for the Anoka Police Department in 1965, a career that spanned 24 years until his retirement as Sargent in 1989.

Our Dad was a proud man in many ways. He was proud of his family. He loved to watch us "shaking it loose" on the dance floor and just got a kick out of watching his children interact. He was proud of his Naval and Police careers. He had a den that displayed pictures, trophies, badges and other mementoes. When he was able, his lawn was meticulously manicured. Bikes were not allowed on the grass let alone the birds he would chase away so they wouldn't leave footprints on the lawn. He was extremely proud of his name. We felt sorry for every telemarketer that mispronounced it. He was proud of his "things". He had many collections he proudly displayed such as beer signs, classic car models, and, most recently, ships. The big things such as boats and cars were even named and labeled.

Mom and Dad extended their home and hearts to a special person we consider a sister. Shari recalls the night Dad brought her to our home when she was 15 and assured her she was safe. She considered him her hero. Shari became a part of our family and lived with us for the rest of her childhood.

Dad wore the pants in the family....at least that's what Mom let him think. Mom and Dad weathered many storms but, 44 years, 6 kids plus Shari, 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild later they remained strong and Dad let everyone know how Mom was his entire world.

Dad had many interests. There was a time in his life he would hunt pheasants with his dogs Sassy and Big Red, but his main recreational love was fishing in the summer and the winter. He made his own fish houses and even let his children help. He was a diehard fisherman at that. Rain or shine he would always go fishing. The same rule apparently, applied to golf. Our brother, Tony, recalls an afternoon of golfing during a downpour. It was raining so hard they couldn't see 50 feet in front of them but they were still swinging at balls. It wasn't all bad though, they had the whole course to themselves! Dad loved to work in his garage. He would be in that garage from morning until night refurbishing an old boat (either to keep or sell) or refinishing the woodwork on a piece of furniture. His garage was his haven, he would even paint the floor. The garage also became party central equipped with its own refrigerator and bar where many celebrations were held that are still talked about today.

Dad also loved music. Our Aunt Patty recalls memories of him playing the guitar and singing to her. In later years he did the same for his children. He would even choreograph hand gestures for us to act out some of his favorite songs by Conway Twitty and the Four Lads. Perhaps some of you were lucky enough to attend functions where we were forced to perform. Dad also enjoyed coaching his daughters softball teams for a few years.

Leo that he was, he lived his life like a lion. There was no sugar coating with Dad. He was always at the ready with his opinions whether you wanted them or not. He was who he was and didn't pretend to be anything different. You either loved him or he thought you loved him. Quite frankly, he didn't care either way but he did have a heart of gold and loved dogs and people and was particularly compassionate toward children. Many people would agree that he had charisma. He was also the king of one-liners, most of which cannot be repeated in the house of God. The one thing Dad enjoyed most in life was being with friends and family. Your visits to the house, your phone calls, your birthday and Christmas cards gave him so much joy and something to look forward to.

This is exactly how Dad would have wanted this day to be. To see all of you here, recalling the memories you once shared with him. He would not want you to grieve for long. He would want you to talk about him, remember him always and to celebrate the times you had together. We would also like to hear all the great stories of our father that we know are out there, please feel free to share them with us.

In closing, our Dad played many roles in life and he did it his way. He was a legend in his own mind and his neighbors considered him a legend so he obviously had them convinced. To all of us who loved him, he is a legend in our own private way.

Deb was born April 14, 1959 in Minneapolis to Norman and Shirley (Peterson) Lillard. She grew up in south Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1977. Deb attended post secondary schooling and would go on to work at Pillsbury and Nestle's for several years.
On June 10, 1999 she was united in marriage to Anthony Betlach in Cambridge and they made their home in Harris. Deb worked as a CNA at the Grandview Christian Home and later at TMA. She enjoyed working with the residents and was planning on furthering her education to become a nurse, but her failing health prevented her from doing so.
Deb was a member of the Cambridge Lutheran Church. She loved animals and was able to house many at the farm. She enjoyed plants and gardening, she liked to go shopping at Wal-Mart late at night, and loved cooking for her family. She was a very caring person and was always concerned for other people. Deb especially loved her kids and loved Christmas; she always made her kids sing Christmas songs when it was time to open their presents. She was very family oriented and was a pillar of strength for her family.

1. There is a difference of birth dates for Theresa, between 1861-1862. Her baptismal certificate says 1861, her headstone says 1862. I will use the headstone date.

2. In speaking to Uncle George, his opinion is that Emil died of a "Broken Heart" meaning that he was "involuntarily" retired from his job, that he didn't understand the concept of retirement; he felt he needed to keep working and when they retired him he didn't adjust. .... There seems to be several different dates for Emil's birth, anywhere from 1856-1858. I took the date on his headstone.
